Unlike many ancient civilizations, the city left no clear records of individual rulers or dynasties. There are no monumental inscriptions naming kings, no obvious royal tombs, and no portraits that can be definitively identified as specific leaders. This absence has led scholars to propose that Teotihuacan may have been governed collectively, perhaps by councils or corporate groups rather than a single autocratic ruler. While authority certainly existed, it appears to have been expressed through shared symbols and monumental architecture rather than personal glorification.Religion was central to Teotihuacan’s identity, shaping both public and private life. In the Maya region, for example, Teotihuacan imagery and political connections are evident in cities such as Tikal, where inscriptions reference interactions with powerful figures from the central Mexican metropolis.
